Taxes for DoorDash, Uber and Instacart drivers

Every payout gets a pit stop.

Gig apps don't take out taxes. Tax Pit Stop tells you how much of each payout to set aside, so you know what April looks like before it gets here.

The math nobody does for you

Where a payout really goes

The app pays you the full amount. Part of it was never yours to spend. We split every payout so you can see it.

  • Self-employment tax$15.00
  • Income tax$9.00
  • State tax$7.00
  • =$142.60

Questions new drivers ask

You

How much should I save? 20%? 30%? 40%?

Pit crew

Guides say all of these. Your real number depends on your miles, your other job, your state and how much you make. We work it out from your own numbers.

You

Nobody took out taxes. What happens in April?

Pit crew

You pay it yourself. That includes a self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare. It catches a lot of new drivers by surprise.

You

Do I have to pay every quarter?

Pit crew

Many drivers do. The IRS wants tax paid during the year, not just in April. We show your due dates and the smallest payment that avoids a penalty.

You

I drive for two apps. Which numbers do I use?

Pit crew

All of them. Tax is on your total. Add every app, and your set-aside counts them together.

You

I didn't get a 1099 form. Do I still owe?

Pit crew

Yes, if you earned the money. Tax is on what you earned, with or without a form.

You

Is there an app to download?

Pit crew

No download needed. On an iPhone, open it in Safari and add it to your home screen. It opens like an app, with no app store.

Three laps

How it works

  1. Add your payouts

Type them in after a shift, do a one-minute weekly check-in, or import a file.

  2. Bring your miles

Keep using your mileage tracker, like Everlance, MileIQ, Stride or Gridwise. Import the file it lets you download. Miles can lower your tax a lot.

  3. See your number

After each payout, see how much to set aside. Get an email before each due date, with plain steps to pay.

More answers

When does it open?

We're building it now. Join the list and we'll email you when it's ready. We won't send anything else.

Is this tax or financial advice?

No. It shows planning estimates from the IRS rules and the numbers you enter, so you can decide what to save. You make the choices. For your tax return, use tax software or a tax professional.

Is my data safe?

We don't connect to your bank. We never ask for your Social Security number. What you enter is encrypted. You can download or delete all of it any time.

Do I need a mileage tracker?

It helps a lot. Tax Pit Stop doesn't track miles. It reads the file from the tracker you already use.

What about state tax?

You enter your state's tax rate. We add it to your set-aside.
